Weekly Post #1: Recent Signings in Baseball
Here is the first of the hopefully weekly blog posts that will be on the website. Today I have a few signings that happened recently in baseball that I didn’t feel like were big enough to make a full episode.
Relievers: The Oakland Athletics have been busy the past few days bolstering their bullpen. They signed RHPs Sergio Romo ($2.5 million), Yusmeiro Petit($2.55 million) , and Trevor Rosenthal ($11 million) all to one year contracts. Rosenthal’s contract is only for one year, but it is deferred, so he gets $3 million in 2021 and 2022, then he gets $5 million in 2023 even if he isn’t on the roster. These signings help strengthen an A’s bullpen that was looking like a weak point coming into Spring Training. I believe these are good signings by the Athletics that can help keep them playoff contenders. Also, the Cubs signed former Red Sox reliever Brandon Workman to a $1 million dollar contract. This is a good low-risk, high-reward signing as he had been pretty solid from 2017-2019.
Taijuan Walker: Just when you thought the Mets were done with free agency, they still had another move to make. The Mets and Taijuan Walker came to an agreement on a 2 year, $20 million dollar contract. Walker was finally fully healthy for the first time since 2017 and he showed he still got it. After the trade to Toronto, he had a 1.37 ERA with a 8.5 K/9 (Strikeouts per 9 innings) in 6 starts. His FIP was a little high at a 4.14, but he joins a strong Mets rotation who will hopefully be getting Noah Syndergaard back soon. Can never have too much pitching.
Comeback Starters?: Matt Harvey and Jake Arrieta both found new homes with hopes they can reach back into their All-Star Forms. Harvey signed a one year deal with the Orioles, while Arrieta went back to the Cubs, where he had most of his success, on a one year deal. Both teams have a weak starting rotation, so it gives both pitchers a good chance to make the opening day rotation if they pitch well.
I am thinking about doing a 7 round mock draft for every team. I would probably start this a few days after free agency. I would do one of these every other day so they wouldn’t count as my weekly posts.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like me to write about in a blog post or talk about on the Podcast. I hope you have a great day.
